This template is for applying categories within teaching approaches. E.g.

{{tool

|sample tool }} produces this

Template:Tool

and places the page in Category:Sample approach, and creates a link from the "(tool )", to "tool /sample tool ".

If you want to tag a word with a category, but cannot use the exact name of the category in the flow of the text, then you can supply a second argument:

|sample tool |some other way to refer to tool }} produces this
