OpenOffice is a free and open productivity suite. It is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. It is free to download and use, and compatible with all other major office suites, including microsoft office.

Besides being able to read and write standard doc and ppt files, Open Office also has native (open) document formats. The RECOUP manual offers document downloads as OpenOffice Text (odt) and OpenOffice Presentation (opd).
