Watch this clip on Abel, a Maths teacher in Zambia demonstrated the relationship of area and perimeter. Think about how GeoGebra can be useful for this lesson.

In the demonstration, the area is kept constant by using the same piece of paper but just rearranging the strips. Can you see a way that Geogebra could be used to demonstrate this? What would be advantages of using Geogebra? The number of times the piece of paper can be cut using Geogebra is infinite, or is it? ;-)

Abel demonstrated how the area is kept constant by using the same piece of paper and rearranging its strips. The number of times a piece can be ‘cut’ and ‘rearranged’ in Geogebra could be infinite! Students could explore in Geogebra how changing the shape of any other figures (e.g. triangles)  in different ways (while not changing the area), would affect the perimeter.

Now watch how Abel talked about why he thought the use of Geogebra would be helpful for his lesson. Was his view similar or different to yours? Do you think your students can make use of Geogebra for this kind of enquiry lesson?

The above shows Abel explaining why he chose to use Geogebra to support the children’s learning during an area vs perimeter task. Discuss the benefits of using Geogebra for this task? How does it support the students’ learning?
One idea is that by not having to work out the area each time they change the 'shape' of the rectangle the students can focus more on what ''is ''changing as they change the 'shape' (from short+fat to long+thin), namely the perimeter.
Students could even set up Geogebra to calculate the perimeter and they could investigate further how the perimeter varies with the 'shape' of a rectangle - this is a mini enquiry in itself.
